With my previous pregnancy I suffered complications, which resulted in an early delivery, emergency caesarean, and a 2-week NICU stint for my precious boy. Since there is a correlation between attended births and vaginal deliveries, we began the process of selecting a doula. We chose Camisha Reed. Still early in her career, she was honest about her experience with VBACs. Her knowledge, warmth and enthusiasm compensated for whatever she lacked experientially.
We had our early visits with Camisha and learned about visualizations, recitations, and Bach flower remedy. Just before our last visit with Camisha, my water broke. At only 35 weeks, I panicked! My husband did a great job of calming and reassuring me. I was also reassured by Camisha, who would meet us at the hospital.
Soon after check in, Camisha arrived. We walked, talked, and worked on the birthing ball. Camisha massaged me with oils, explaining their role in the birthing process. She brushed my hair and encouraged me softly. We were supported, when the nurse arbitrarily raised the Pitocin levels (despite knowing our wishes against this). When I decided to get an epidural, Camisha reminded me that I had never committed to a natural birth. Camisha does not make one feel inadequate because of their particular choices in the birthing experience. She supports you, whether you want a full natural birth, or if you feel you may need help.
Before we knew it, I was ready to push! One of the nurses began to ask Camisha for her name (realizing there was much credence to the roles Doulas play, Iâ??m sure). My precious boy was born at 4 lbs. 14 ozs.
At the post-delivery visit, Camisha checked up on how the nursing was going and gave us our birth story, pictures and homemade bread. This vaginal birth was possible because of the calming presence and knowledge of Camisha Reed. I highly recommend Camisha to any mother looking for a knowledgeable, supportive, and caring Doula.
